    Re: The ULTIMATE gear list

Just a very rough and read guide to where to buy some of the best Indiana Jones gear for people new to this hobby:

    Jackets
The jacket Indy wears in the four films is different in each case so please keep this in mind. A jacket that has the Raiders vibe is a different beast to one that gives off that Last Crusade feeling....

Peter Botwright Wested Leather was involved in producing the actual film jackets for Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusade. Wested have varied their jacket patterns over the years, largely in response to fan requests to get a more screen accurate (SA) jacket. Their current "Hero" version of the jacket is now a very good jacket for lovers of that Raiders look. They also make a very good Last Crusade / Crystal Skull jacket. One of Wested's strengths is that they offer a wide range of leathers and their prices are very reasonable.

Tony Nowak Originals (TNO). The late Mr Nowak made the screen used jackets for the Crystal Skull movie. He then went on to produce a variety of expert copies of jackets for fans. In order to assist in this process he was given access to a screen used Raiders jacket to copy. His jackets are expensive but beautifully made. The business is currently being restructed after Tony's death, so at present these jackets are only available on the secondary market. It is hoped that they will become available again in the not too distant future.

Bill Kelso is a new European entry into the Indiana Jones market. His Relic Hunter jacket is an exact copy of the Nowak Raiders jacket and is thus very accurate to what is seen on screen. It looks to be a first rate product available in a good range of leathers. Kelso has previously made first rate A2 jackets, so there is no reason to think that the Indy jackets won't be as good.

Todds Costumes make a very good budget jacket which follows a convincing Raiders pattern. The leather on the jackets is thin but this helps it achieve the Raiders look on many satisfied customers. If you don't have much money to spend this is a great starter jacket.

Other suppliers include US Wings, G&B and Magnoli Clothiers. These vary in screen accuracy and price.

    Shirts

The main suppliers of Indy shirts are as follows:

Wested - an OK shirt if a little too yellow in colour for my taste and the buttons a little large.

Adventurbilt (Europe) - A really nice replica of the Raiders shirt at a premium price. These are not always available.

What Price Glory (WPG) - Not a bad shirt. Be aware that it shrinks in the wash so go for a large size. The colour and detail is pretty good.

Azuma - These were only made in a few batches so far by a fan in the Far East. Only currently available on the second hand market. Very accruate and nicely made - based on the Last Crusade and ToD shirts.

Todds Costumes - Very nice and good value for money. Colour is a little yellow and the material has a waffle type weave which is unlike the original.

Magnoli Clothiers- Made to measure and quite expensive as a result. Material is rather heavy compared to the MBA or AB. Nice though!

Noel Howard / MBA - No longer available. Mr Howard made the shirts for the original three films. Great materials and pattern and expensive on the second hand market. The material for these has an almost silky texture and sheen which is not replicated in any of the other copies of the shirt.

    Pants / Trousers

    Not too many options here.

Todds Costumes - Todd has put a lot of effort into making the ultimate Raiders trousers (which are a slightly different colour to the later LC versions). Great trousers and very accurate. These are real winners.

Wested - More of a Last Crusade colour. Not as nice a the Todds version but a little cheaper.

Magnoli Clothiers - Nice made to measure pants. Not quite as good a colour match for Raiders as the Todd versions IMHO.

MBA / Noel Howard - No longer available but very accurate as you'd expect from the guy who worked on the original films.

    Boots

Indy's boots throughout all 4 movies were made by Alden Shoe Company of San Francisco.

The Alden 405 is still avaialble from their shop and online. It's a lovely item of footware but VERY expensive. Adventurebilt (Europe) also do an exclsuive version in a more SA darker leather at an even more premium price.

Todds Costumes make a budget copy of the boot. They certainly look the part although it would be too much to expect them to last quite as well as the much more expensive originals.

Magnoli Clothiers also make a copy. In this case its made to measure and is quite pricey. The advantage is that it come in a variety of different leathers and options.

    Re: The ULTIMATE gear list

Wested Leather also had access to a screen used Temple of Doom jacket from the collection of the late Noel Howard, the former Studio Manager of Berman's & Nathan's - the costume house that handled the costumes for the original trilogy.

From their study of that original jacket, Wested's is the most accurate in construction, materials and pattern that you can purchase.

The Noel Howard collection now resides in the collection of Propstore of London.

The original maker of the Temple of Doom Jacket has been confused by certain parties. It is possible that the Temple jacket was made in house at Berman's as it appears that Wested/Leather Concessionaires was not working with Berman's at the time. There was a disagreement about them supplying costumes to Danjaq Productions directly (for Bond) without Berman's knowledge. The film in question is likely to be 'Octopussy', although Peter seems to remember it as 'A View to a Kill' which was made AFTER TOD so the timelines do not quite match up!

    Leather gear

Todds costumes make very reasonably priced gun belts, holsters and bag straps. I've had several of their items and the quality is surprisingly good.

Wade Egan makes hand made holsters, belts and straps. His are available in a range of different leathers and are even pre-distressed if necessary. Wade also supplies the leather gear that Magnoli Clothiers sell.

Adventurebilt also sell holsters although they are not available that often. Top quality.

Jake Johnson also made great looking holsters (I believe he made some holsters for a number of western films). I'm not sure if these are still available?

As far a holsters for indy's Webley go (as seen in LC and CS) it's possible to pick up really good genuine WW1 or WW2 examples from eBay

    Re: The ULTIMATE gear list

    The Fedora

Ok, this is a big one and I'm going to need some help here...

Penman hats - John Penman makes some of the finest looking Indy fedoras out there- from either beaver or rabbit fur felt. Keep in mind that with any of these hand made hats there's going to be a fair old wait time. If you're not in a rush worth waiting for.

Adventurebilt - this company is split between the USA (Steve Delk) and Europe (Marc). Both sides of the company make very fine hats. They made the screen used items in Crystal skull so we're talking quality. Mainly beaver felt but Steve will also turn them out in rabbit if asked. There's a BIG wait time for these and Steves health problems haven't helped. Great hats.

The AB Henry - this is a factory produced hat made by adventurebilt (Europe). It's the best factory hat out there and is 20% beaver felt mixed with rabbit. A lot of hat for the money.

Akubra. This Australian firm produce the Federation IV Indy style fedora. It's a nice enough and robust hat although rather rigid for my taste. Good value and quality though.

Todds costumes- Todd has produced a number of Indy hats - the downtowner, the Uptowner and most recently the Raider. They're good value hats but in my opinion a slightly exaggerated version of the Indy hat. Mind you, they do look good on some people

Herbert Johnson - these guys made the hats for the first three films. That said the current version of their fedora, the Poet, is not entirely like the hats used in the films. For all that I think they're nice enough hats although overpriced.

Christies Hats- a uk factory hat that can actually do a decent impersonation of an Indy hat despite the bad press they receive in certain circles.

Then there are a few specialist guys - Schubert Hats, Fedoraraiders and Garrison Hatters. These chaps all specialise in making screen accurate raiders of the lost ark hats , often complete with screen accurate distressing and dirt. I love my Schubert Streets of Cairo fedora but it's probably not to everyone's taste!

I've missed loads so please add to the list....

A quick guide like this is always VERY useful. For beginners but also for the more experienced.

I would think that absolutely no vendor in our knowledge should be left outside the guide, and also that the websites of the vendors should be included.

Sure thing. I'm just making this up as I go along. Feel free to add to it. I think it's important we make the site friendlier to people new to the hobby. Most of our jacket discussions get very 'technical'
