You guys get first crack at this. I ordered this for my dad for Christmas last year and he decided he wasn't going to wear it (too "formal," I guess), so he gave it back.

It sat on his head for all of two minutes. Open crown, as received, in original shipping box with sizing foam strip.

I understand where he's coming from. He liked it and appreciated the thought, but didn't think he'd use it and wanted me to save the money. (I can't wear it because I'm a 60.)

The reason I wanted to know if you were hurt by his actions is because when I was about 6 or 7 years old, I noticed my dad waching basketball on TV. When his birthday came around, I went to the store to buy him a present, and I saw a package of basketball bubblegum trading cards. Knowing he watched basketball, I bought him two packs of these cards. I was pleased with myself for choosing something that related to something he liked. When he opened them on his birthday, he qickly looked at them, then handed them to me and said, "You want 'em?"

I was crushed. Just a little kid, and he looked like he rejected my gift. Of course, as an adult now, what would he do with it, but looking back, if it was me, and my young son gave me this item, I would have looked at the cards, tell him this was such a thoughtful gift, and would make it appear that this was something I was going to keep, and perhaps put it somewhere that looked like I treasured it. I think THAT would have been thoughtful.
My dad is no longer alive, and he never knew how much (even to this day) how much that hurt me. I was just a little boy.

He was a good man, he just wasn't thinking.

What is interesting HJJ is the impact it has had on you many years later. It sort of teaches us a lesson when it comes to children. Their time and feelings are no less important to them as ours are to us and what we say and do can have long lasting affects, good or bad.

Yep. I still see it played out when I close my eyes, like it happened yesterday. I'm 46 now. It really is amazing how something so small like that can hurt after all these years. I never told him about it. But as a result, if somthing like that happens to me, or if I get a gift that I already own, I make absolutely certain to accept it graciously, and thank them evey so much. If one of my little nieces gives me something that I find valueless, I'll cherish it, and make them think it was the greatest gift ever, because when something comes from heart of an innocent child, it IS the greatest gift you could recieve.
