Ok, Crisman's little comment made me think to calll my leather guy and I just got off the phone. It's looking like he has some of the hides as seen here: http://www.fortuneandglory.org/index.php?topic=1422.0 here: http://www.fortuneandglory.org/index.php?topic=1164.0

This time, they are DARK BROWN.

:o

These are Italian leather and as you have seen, profoundly screen accurate. I am just waiting on a sample that I should have in the next day or so so can post pics and give you a handle on how much the colour differs from the last type. Then it's just a matter of giving your hides to Riley, Peter or Todd (checking with them first, of course!) and you will have the most S.A. jacket possible.

Numbers will be EXTREMELY LIMITED as they are the remnants of a batch from Italy. Cost is likely to be about $400 plus postage but I am just waiting to confirm that, along with how many jackets' worth they have.

If you are interested, let me know. First in, best dressed.

Dammit, why must I open my mouth. I'm going to get a calculator and my bill sheet and see what I can do.

This is Italian leather that we will buy from Australia?

Yep. From a New Zealand sheep. :D

Why?!? Why did this have to come up now?!? I want this leather bad, but have confirmed a leather style with Riley already! I would love to order this and switch it but I can't get a hold of Riley to let him know, or if it would be ok.

Riley doesn't have a problem using leather provided, but yeah, absolutely you should check with him if he's ordered something special.

Ok, so the samples have arrived.

The right hand one is the hide you've seen on the recent jackets - a very charcoaly colour. The left hand one I think looks kinda cool, but is too blotchy and distresses way too easily for a Raiders jacket. The one in the middle is a pretty good match for the way the jacket looks in the movie when it doesn't look greyish black. It's a very dark mid brown. Not so mahogany like the TNO shrunken lamb. More of a 747 vibe, but in lamb. Will distress very nice and subtlely with a bit of effort - I did the scuffs you see by rubbing the dark brown on exposed rough brickwork - HARD. Very tough for a lamb.

Yup. That middle one is nice.... The lighter brown would look great on another vintage jacket design

then again $400 for lamb is too much.

Can you source the same for less?

If it takes about 6 hides to make a jacket that would be about $65 a skin. Purchasing bulk batches by the vendors may give them a better deal, but then it depends on what your after here.

It's about $6.50 a square foot, which is the going rate for Italian lambskin. No-one's forcing anyone to buy it.

6.50$ is a very good price. I bought one sq. ft. of calfskin from my local leather shop for a grail diary cover and it cost 10.00 $

crismans

Look at it in perspective. How much have most of us spent here chasing this elusive jacket? $400 isn't all that much as my poor bank account can attest.

It looks like my figures are off. How many skins are you thinking each person will need.

Gunslinger

It depends on the size of the hides. These are bigger than the more shrunken ones you photographed for me at Tony's that time, but I allow for a fair bit of wastage. On average they are 6-8 ft square each, thus I allow for about 8-10 hides.

Retail price for italian lamb here should be about 30 eur per sqm and need like 4 sqm for a jacket.
So say abt $160.

Are you quoting for ordinary lamb, or for shrunken grain process lamb? Be precise with the cost, not "just should be about"

In all seriousness Platon, if you can get very accurate stuff at a cheap price, then get some, post photos, and give people to opportunity to get some.

RCSignals
01-28-2011, 10:34 PM
Exactly. The world supply of this stuff is short, and leather prices are skyrocketing. So if there is a real source of the stuff at a great price, let everyone know or arrange to let people buy it from you.

Let's talk about this. A square meter is what like 10.8 square feet. What's an average hide's dimensions. 4 x 3 feet on average. Gunslinger what was it approx for the last bunch of hides you were able to get? Using 4 x 3 feet is approx 12 square feet. I mean that's not really too far off from 1 square meter equaling one skin. Platon, it sounds like your basically saying 4 hides to make a jacket and you can get quality Italian tanned lambskins for basically a bit less than $40 per skin. Is this correct? You're saying a jacket only needs 4 lambskins at $40 a skin for a total of $160.00 total and where you are at you have access to high quality, new zealand, Italian tanned lambskins where you can buy 4 skins at a time for $40 a skin and the skins are such that there will be no wastage.

Am I reading you right? If so, you should contact David Hack and let him know you can provide this. This could be an amazing business opportunity for you.

First post here. Beautiful stuff. I was trying to talk the wife into a shiny vintage goat by Riley but this...

Any idea how much he would charge for the labor and hardware without having to email him?

Gunslinger

I believe $800 is the going rate. Personally, I think this new batch is also very suited for a ToD or even a LC. I looked at ToD the other day and was amazed at how well it matches.

Gunslinger
02-03-2011, 09:43 AM
After watching ToD, I started messing with some distressing and did this with some 180grit sandpaper and rubbing it HARD on exposed brickwork. It's kind of got me thinking about a ToD jacket now - one I haven't particularly wanted lately. :D

So far I have seen smooth surface lamb.
They promised to get me new zealand lamb grainy and all but still waiting.

Will let you know if any news.

It's hard for me to tell Gunslinger on the grain of the darker brown samples. Is this Striated Shrunken New Zealand lamb like the black skins used in your last jacket.

Gunslinger
02-03-2011, 08:43 PM
It's very similar to the last batch except not as "lumpy", and from what I've been told, since my earlier posts, un-striated, though it may have a few bits here and there. It vibes the "warmer" scenes, like Raven Bar, Idol Grab, etc.
