View Full Version : Primer on the Raiders Fedora

I came up with this set of images to help new fans who aren't familiar with all the jargon and such surrounding the Raiders hat. I hope it helps somewhat.

Oh, that was YOU Jason!? Cool work man. I remember at the time that what you were asking was a really good idea and what a shame it was there seemed to be so many people making things difficult.

I remember that as well. It was a good idea but there seemed to be some people bent on disrupting.

These are really good. Sort of like Cliff Notes for the fedora.

Thanks, guys. Yeah, that was me. I couldn't believe the ruckus such a simple idea caused. ::)

I like the idea. Gives new people a heads up on the terms that most use. The only thing that I don't agree with is that some of the deep creases that you pointed out could be caused by lighting but overall I like the idea.

The only one missing in terms of hat evolution is a flying wing / truck chase hat. I can bang out a matching "card" if you want to bump me the files.

Thanks for offering, Gunslinger, but I think I'd like to keep them as is. These are the only hats in the film with significant differences that we all talk about. The truck chase/flying wing hat may have some minuscule differences that hat nuts like you and me notice, but more casual fans aren't going to see at all. From just a casual look, the flying wing hat is the Cairo hat. Like someone pointed out, this is more intended to be a "crib notes" for the basic hat styles found in the film, not an in-depth analysis of every nuance of the hat in all the major scenes. Not that doing that wouldn't be a good idea! But this was more geared toward the "newbie" who just wants to know the jargon and what hats we are talking about when we say "Cairo" or "Raven Bar," etc.

Would the shooting schedule offer insight as to how many hats these four styles actually were? All the hats do not look like a natural evolution of how a hat would morph in these extreme conditions. The SoC hat looks the most abused, more abused than the Well of Souls (WoS) and truck chase hats (TC) which should look worse than the SoC, and not worse, because those events occurred after the SoC chase.

The jump from the outside-the-temple hat (OtT) to the inside-the-temple hat (ItT) doesnt look right, though because the chronology is seconds apart and the hats are very different. After the plane escape, a large amount of story time passes until we next se the hat in Nepal, so anything could have happened, but the ItT is close enough to the Raven Bar (RB) hat that it couldve been reblocked by Indy's hatter after the river dunking, and put away until needed again in Nepal.

I actually think it's possible there were as few as 2 hats used. Maybe more. But based on the shooting schedule and looking at the hats in the scenes as they go, there is a lot of evidence that it's basically 1 hat used from the temple scenes onwards. They dirty it up a LOT for the exiting the crypt / flying wing / truck chase, and then brush off that same hat to clean it up for the SoC scenes. When they get to Hawaii, it's an all-new hat. (eg. The dimensional cut of the brim has been cut narrower)

When you redid my AB Deluxe beaver, I remember you did the analysis with the differences in the dimensional brim cuts. We should put those up somewhere.

These shots of the hat I reblocked for Bryan show how much the Hawaii differs from the main hero hat. If I recall the brim as per these shots was about 2 5/8, and you can see the amount of overhang. I'm pretty sure I trimmed it down to about 2 1/4 or so.
