View Full Version : Gunslinger's TNO "Main Hero" Jacket

Well I'm happy to say I hammered out the final details on a new Nowak with Riley this morning.

It's going to be as close a clone to the Raiders hero jacket that I can manage, in what's best described as a "warm charcoal" striated shrunken lamb from my own source. (My new RH chest panel below) I spent about 2 hours sorting through hides for myself and 2 other F&G members - you've seen Faststreetsofhongkong's - with the third yet to come. (I'll leave that reveal to him! ;) ) And then a solid 20 hours or so getting the 2 sets of striated hides matched panel by panel to the film's hero jacket, and marking up all the main panels using a pattern made from my existing TNO jacket. I made a bunch of fresh observations of Raiders yet again just to fine tune my details from last time. What I LOVE about working with Riley (and of course Tony before him) is that you know what you are starting from in the way of a REAL screen used jacket, so then have the luxury of just tweaking the crazy-neurotic stuff that differentiates the Hawaii/Imams jacket that Tony had in hand from the Main Hero jacket that I want to replicate.

Anyway, my goal is to recreate the by-the-barrels / flying wing / black looking jacket look, but in person. I don't care the "real" jacket was brown where this is the concern, because people's eyes don't have film filtering and colour grading built into their eyes looking at the jacket in person.

I think Riley said he was cutting it on Monday so hopefully I may have it in a week or 2. Can't wait! :P

Spoke to Riley. Jacket is currently being assembled. I am stoked that he called me to settle an argument he was having with his sewing guy about how big to make the LH zipper gap. Like getting it correct to the mm! THAT'S SERVICE! Taking one f***ing nutcase's neuroses and running with it! :D Anyway, I threw in my 2 cents and the work continues...

This jacket sounds awesome. I'm wondering if we can ask Riley to use the specs. I'd be interested since I have a Raiders jacket to get to. Gunslinger, let me know if that would be cool.

I am in no way jealous of you getting this jacket.... Not at all..... If there's one thing we all know, it's that you cannot hope to get an SA raiders jacket from studying the screen caps while drinking coolaid.... I have the original patterns but my NDA prevents me from showing them to you .... :)

Indiego Jones

djd is absolutely right.

It's impossible this jacket be SA...
Unless....Riley is making the jacket OVERNIGHT, supervised ONLY by a renowned director....in LONDON! :-\
And we know, he's not...so:

I suggest you, next time, talk to the "top men" for the correct recipe in making original and SA jackets...stop waisting your time on screengrabs, you'll end up blind, you know? nobody told you this? ???

Yes, you could make that assumption. The bird will be shot soon, but probably not today. I've gotta come up with a way of breaking it in / de-crinkling it / knocking the shine off it in 30 degree weather first. And no, I'm not going to go looking for a mechanic to start a fight with.

...but...wow. I can't imagine anything closer to "IT" at the moment. It drapes like the Main Hero jacket, INCLUDING the way the collar rolls, etc. straight out of the box. All details dead-on. But I'll avoid writing an essay for the moment.

Ok, so I've already discussed this project here: http://www.fortuneandglory.org/index.php?topic=1030.0

I got the jacket yesterday. It's 30 degrees here so I've not worn it for more than five minutes - the way it looks here is how it came out of the box. It's obviously still a bit crinkly from the stitching, etc. and is looking pretty shiny, which is exacerbating the grain in photos. As you can see, the angle of the light plays a huge part in how strong the grain looks.

All in all - VERY happy. Riley and the TNO team did an EXCELLENT job, and was very gracious at following my incredibly neurotic tweaks to the letter. He even double checked a few little things that I didn't think to be specific enough about. I marked up every panel myself so that the grain perfectly matches that of the Main Hero jacket in all the key places, and here and there I can see the chalk marks of where they nailed the cutting / stitching perfectly on the money. Beautiful.

It fits me like a glove (which it should do because it's the identical cut to my existing SSL TNO jacket), and I will get more of a review up with pictures of me wearing it when I have broken it in a bit.

cheers, Kurt.

Yeah, yeah. :D

It's not the 30 degrees in a leather jacket. It's 30 degrees in a WET leather jacket!

In any event, about half an hour after I took those shots, we had some rain, so I took the opportunity to go to the corner shop. But of course, it HAMMERED down! So by half way there, I was DRENCHED. Just absolutely soaked the thing. I've been wearing the jacket for about 8 hours since then and it's nice and "molded", and the shine well and truly knocked off. As a side note, it's got the Nowak "police" lining, and it's VERY good. I've never worn a wet jacket and feel totally comfortable the whole time. Pretty cool.

Anyway, assuming it fines up a bit tomorrow I'll get some shots. (Thanks for the compliments guys! :police:)

I know we've had our discussions about what we see in regards to the most minute of details regarding the jackets seen in the film. However, my compliments on completing your project and getting it made exactly as you wanted. When you opened up the box, did the grin just about break your face. I know if it were me, I'd have been sitting by the pool with a cigar, some port, and just let the feeling of satisfaction linger. When we're driven like we are, and something meets or exceeds our expectations and comes out as planned, it's good to sit back and enjoy the accomplishment. Good job Kurt.

Few questions:
1. What are your thoughts on New Zealand vs Australian Striated Lamb especially in view of SA
2. Did the guy you buy it from say whether your skins where shrunken lamb or not
3. Are you retiring from the hobby now
4. Loved the right arm photo compare. What do you think of the thickness of the leather vs SA

Thanks mate. And to think I almost said no to the samples! I was originally talking about sourcing a brown shrunken lambskin, but though the guy understood what I was after, he only had it in black. He'd been so helpful talking for ages on the phone I felt I had to be polite and accept the samples even though I was picturing that it would be "too black" and just not right for a Raiders. I realised how wrong I was the second they arrived in the mail! So yeah, at that point, I knew what had to be done. :)

Thanks mate, and to the other more recent people who've commented. Well, the weird thing is I wasn't really prepared for it to arrive. But yeah, it was GOOD. 8)

1. New Zealand.
2. Yes, they are shrunken. This just isn't debatable. I walked into the leather warehouse with my Nowak, and these guys knew leather all the way. As in, they're Australia's biggest suppliers, and I had the owner and his main despatch guy shooting the breeze and helping. It was very cool. Anyway, he explained this style of hide is also called la vato (lavato?) - and is washed. There are clearly different ways to tan the different varieties of lambskin (and this stuff is fairly different to my Nowak in that respect), but he said that the specific breed is very important in getting not only the right type of lines that are desired, but also the degree to which it reacts to the tanning process and essentially shrinks. These skins are much bigger than those used for my Nowak, btw. Much less shrunk, thinner, and far more porous. It sucks up water like a sponge.
3. I'm taking a backseat for at least a while. No more big projects, that's for sure. I'm taking a chill pill from it now - other fish to fry. If I buy anything else, it will be a Surrogates jacket.
4. Yes, I think the thickness of this one is dead-on. It's fairly thin. And you can see it in the Imams scene how thin the leather is when Sallah claps him on the shoulders. And stuff like the droopy collar is in part created by the leather being so thin. And those little striation bubbles are even thinner. The shape of each one actually changes as you tension the hide (or panels). When you pull it diagonally, you get what you see on the chest panel, for example. It'll be interesting to see how the jacket evolves over time where grain is concerned.

Oh well. I tried to post some of these pictures over at COW. I thought members might like to see such a fine looking jacket. Apparently not. Locked and then deleted. I still can't quite understand what rule I broke. You know, I'm good at understanding law and rules. Couldn't do my job otherwise, but it's tricky when the rules mean whatever the admin says they mean- even if they don't say it... If they just said 'look, we're really really small minded, so the rule is we don't want you to mention or post anything that might make a banned member look good or anything that makes us look like we're not actually the sharpest tacks in the box'. If it was written like that I could understand what they actually wanted.

Kurt this jacket is a perfect bullseye imo... so many details nailed. ??? That hide, the collar, the pocket flaps, the crammed 'C-shape' zipper, etc.

Congrats on your hard work, the payoff is monumental!

The more I look at it, the more I salivate over this jacket, Kurt. It is truly phenomenal and the "risk" you took on the color has more than paid off. It looks like it just came off the back of someone in a fight with a German Mechanic. I have to agree that this has ruined it for those looking for the perfect jacket. If someone could get closer to the real deal, I'd love to see it.

And DJD, don't get yourself banned! The powers that be don't like it when someone argues with them or someone outside their little circle demonstrates that they know what they're talking about.

Oh My GOD!!!!

That is the most spot on, perfect hero jacket I have ever seen in my entire LIFE! ???
Even the striations are spot on!!!!

All other Indy jacket makers should look at this jacket and realize that their whole life has been wasted! Wasted I say!!

(Can you tell I really like that jacket? :D )

DJD,

I totally agree with you. COW just hasn't been the same since the last round of "bannings".
I'm actually afraid to speak my mind there as I might anger the wrong person and be banned myself.
Hell, sometimes I'm afraid to speak my mind HERE as they may read it and ban me there.

Don't be afraid to speak your mind here on Gear or anything. You won't be banned for it here.
Why should what you do in life be governed by a few people 'there'?

Too many people are 'afraid' to say what they want to say even here which isn't there, because of it, unless it is to come here to tell people here to change what they say here. (How's that for a long grammatically incorrect sentence? )

MyPetElvis,

I fully understand what you're saying. After my initial "suspension", I had to really work to persuade the powers that be to reinstate me. Worried that ANYTHING I say could be misconstrued as a way to ban me, I don't post anything there anymore. I was close the other day and actually did post something, but then I got worried again and ended up pulling it. I really could've helped the fellow as I knew and had experience with what he was talking about, but with my past history of suspension there and how the admin really pushed me on my knees, I really worry they are watching and looking for any way to get those who went against the grain.

However, I'm working up the realization that they win if we are quiet and cower in the corner and I have to keep asking myself - "is it really worth it to be in such company if they do ban me?" So I'm going to work myself to do a little more posting over there and if I do pull the wrong strings and get suspended, I'm going to try and take other people's reflections on here that "it was for the best and it wasn't good company to begin with".

So what I'm saying is --- keep posting there. If you do p-off some people that results in a suspension or ban, remember that it's their problem and not yours and that it's probably not a good place to stick around at anyways. And don't be afraid of them reading your stuff over here. It's better to tell the truth than be a minion of them and go against everything you believe in.

RC & DSS,

I try not to hold back while I'm here.
I'm not looking to flame anyone (here or there, just not may style), it's just that I have that little thought always present in the back of my mind.

Anyways, sorry for the derail, back to the bitchin' jacket talk currently in progress.

MPE,

I understood where you were coming from. You definitely don't seem the type to flame anyone and I'm not one either to. So if my post is considered a "flame" by anyone, please let me know and I'll try to get it revised. I just wanted to show that we cannot be afraid or we've lost ourselves and who we truly are. I'm happy to say I've posted 2-3 times today on the other forum with "no side effects" ;)

Anyways, like you, I've derailed this sucker completely. Hopefully the train-bed workers can come and prop her up again and get her on her way.

Ok, I'll oblige. ;)

So this is a bit of a weird one to review because of the process that I went through, but all I can say is that after the last jacket I got from Riley, I had complete faith that he could nail this one, and he did. I took my last jacket, which fits me perfectly, and traced the panels, using them to go through the hides to select which panel was to go where, and marked each with chalk. (To tally with my measurements / sized pattern(?) he already has on file.) I sent them to Riley along with a bunch of tweaks to convert the 000/888 Hawaii-derived jacket to the Main Hero.

I have to say, in doing my research on things like pocket flaps, I was astounded at how accurate the Nowak is. The pocket flaps for example are dead-on. However, I wanted the other jacket, so needed to take the pattern's accuracy as a given and focus on the little differences.

They include:
Collar tips & tensioning.
Collar stand height, shape & configuration.
Zipper cramming & LH gap.
Pocket size & pocket flap shape, position of popper.
Back pleats.

Other things I got done were personal preferences. I went with the black "Police"-style lining, and no inside pocket. Numbered it 159 after my other favourite toy. :)

Anyway, so Riley and the boys came through like champs, and even called me to check on the zipper gap, which I hadn't specified accurately enough for them, which was cool. (As there seemed to be a difference of opinion, I think it was really to settle a bet! :D)

What else can I say? VERY happy. I don't know how much longer Riley's going to be in the game, but do yourself a favour and just get yourself at least one Nowak.

Wow. At the risk of coming across very self-absorbed, I just tried the jacket on after days of just looking at it occasionally, looked in the mirror and turned my back with one arm extended, and it was like it was looking at a slice of the movie. I don't say that lightly or with any ego. I've never had that happen with a jacket before - I'm astounded. I mean, it looks IDENTICAL. And it behaves exactly the same as well when you start throwing punches, etc. (Ok, I was watching myself throw punches in the mirror! :D) But... H-o-l-y-C-r-a-p! Very surreal. I think I may upload video rather than just shots of it being worn. VERY freaky.

Is the wear showing on it 'natural' or have you helped it?

Is it showing brown through the wear or is that illusion?

Gunslinger
12-20-2010, 06:36 AM
All I did was get caught in heavy rain and then wore it. It hasn't broken in properly yet - still stiff in places (mainly the chest) after that hammering.

I just used a mixed colour concoction for the dust - and yeah, some of it is brown, some of it grey. I hit the back seam with a little extra brown. Go here and click to check this out at 100% - you can see the grain and the "dirt" better:

http://i644.photobucket.com/albums/uu163/roninbd/th_grain-1.jpg (http://s644.photobucket.com/albums/uu163/roninbd/?action=view&current=grain-1.jpg)

Having said that, the closeup of my stomach area is pretty much how the "black" looks anyway. It comes off like warm charcoal even without the dust.

Be interesting to see what it wears like when it does start to scuff up. ...resisting any temptation to break out the pocket knife and attack the right shoulder seam.

It really looks "true to the eye". We have all watched Raiders so many times, when something clicks, it just clicks.

When you have time to some shots match stills from the film if you don't mind.

I will say it straight out, without question that is the most accurate Raiders Jacket I have ever seen that is not actual wardrobe. Simply amazing.

Not the cleanest images, but I'm digging the almost crunchy/crinkly aspect to the leather as it's seen in some of the film scenes. Your jacket caught my eye in that regards. Plus not bad overall comparison shots to The Main Hero jacket. Too bad my screengrabs tend to be blurry. It looks like you may have longer arms than HF.

I had a few queries about getting more of this leather for people, so just spoke to the guy I bought it from. No go, unfortunately. Someone came in and grabbed all the other hides literally the day after I was there.

But he does get that style of hide in from time to time from Italy, and there MAY be some in late January. All I can suggest is if you want something like this, let me know and I can contact you if/when anything happens. But bear in mind it will cost at least $350 plus $100 shipping if you're outside Australia. The stuff I got was half price, so it's quite possible future lots may be more like $600. I know - eek. But if it's remnants of batches, it may be the cheaper price.

I have to second the comment about this being the most accurate-looking Raiders jacket ever seen. The color of course isn't perfect, but in these shots it matches the greyish cast it has in many of the shots we love from Raiders, so it looks right anyway, which I know was your intent Gunslinger. Incredible jacket. Congrats!
