I'm just wondering what these weird lines are around the pocket flaps - is it some sort of backing glue that has warped the leather? It looks too specifically like a rectangle to be shrunken grain...

Yes, this has been attributed to the backing tape surrounding the pocket puckering after distressing.

Nice photo BTW. Nice rounded point to the flap not the sharp point that has been cropping up recently...

:D

So by distressing do you mean water treatment / shrinkage?

Yup. Erri had a jacket that showed this to some extent.

Notice the back of the collar.

Yeah, It's so hard to work out what's grain / texture and what's this backing tape, or even gathering from the stitching.

EG - One moment we can clearly see striations and grain:

http://i644.photobucket.com/albums/uu163/roninbd/Raiders2010-03-22-20h54m20s73.jpg

Then, the angle of light changes and we see this:

http://i644.photobucket.com/albums/uu163/roninbd/Raiders2010-03-22-20h52m10s47.jpg

So, it makes me think that there is the general graining, and in addition, there is this backing tape which is more extreme.

Another shot, this time of the Hero jacket. Again, note the various types of grain going on:

So I'm also wondering if that tape was used on the back panel edging (of the pleats) - is there a way to achieve that without water treatment?

I can feel something inside all of my Indy jackets that is the right size and shape. And I've seen that exact effect on many older, well used jackets. You can see a little bit of it on my jacket in the pic, but the jacket was almost new, still.

I don't think backing tape is the issue Gunslinger. It appears in different areas of the jacket. The back of the collar. The back panel. KT where did this attribution come from?

It's not an 'attribution'. It's how the jacket was and still is constructed by Leather Concessionaires/Wested.

It's tape. Heat fused tape, the iron on stuff. If you see the effect in other places ie on the collar, at the cuffs chances are it's been used there too.

I see. Is it possible the tape wasn't used on The Main Hero Jacket? I'll have to take a closer look it to see if those effects are there too.

I couldn't find any of it on the Hero jacket's pocket areas in the whole movie, but you'll notice it's visible on the back in the Well of Souls capture I included above. To me those ripples look exactly as long as the pleat is deep.

It's possible that the 'Main hero' wasn't soaked and aggressively dried as much as the 'Hawaii'.

But also possible that it's tape did not react in the same way.

I did see a guy at the coffee shop that had a lamb leather jacket on, that had leather that looked very much like the Raiders leather minus the stirations. I asked him if the leather came like that and how long he had it. He said it came smooth when he bought it. He had it for more than 5 years, and said its just natural wear in the rain, snow etc that made it look like it did. It was grainy, and had all the pucker marks like in the above pictures around the bottom of the jacket.

Note the areas around the pocket here show the same patterning.

Yes it does. I wonder if this jacket had distressing and water treatment done to it also like you describe above.
