Thought I'd share a few shots from when I was in Spain recently. This was pretty cool, actually. I had the luxury of taking a holiday from a long holiday in France to take 9 days to drive around Spain looking at movie locations. - Basically it felt like one giant desert / Western adventure going to where they shot The Good the Bad & the Ugly, Fistful of Dollars, A Few Dollars More, Lawrence of Arabia, accidentally Ridley Scott's upcoming thing (can't remember the name - Exodus?) and a bunch of others, of course including Indy. The kids loved it; my wife, not so much.:D

Anyway, here are the Indy-related ones, with locations so you can find them, as getting this info on some of them from the Internet is a bit sketchy.

Monsul Beach, Almeria:
You get here via a little beach town called San Jose. Into town, veer right after the roundabout, then it's a few clicks to the south. Gotta pay a few Euro to park at the beach. Be sure to go all the way to the carpark, not park on the road, which seems like it may be closer, but isn't.

No seagulls. But in the movie you can see how windy it is. Seems that's fairly typical.

The water there is FREEZING, despite it being summer, so decided to climb the big rock thing.

View from the top's pretty good.

more soon.

That panoramic is my favorite. Also, I'd love to see locations from Sergio Leone's spaghetti westerns!

Ok mate I'll post them too. If you like Leone, this sort of thing will be familiar - I took this shot straight across the road from the beach!

Now to some cooler stuff. About half an hour north of Almeria (on the road to Tabernas) there's a place called Oasys (Mini Hollywood). This is where they shot (among others) A Few Dollars More. It's surrounded by Europe's biggest desert. To explore it properly, you REALLY need a 4WD. To find all the filming locations, you absolutely need a guide. I hired a fantastic one called Cristina from Malcamino's - http://www.unique-almeria.com/western-movie-locations.html - she and her partner literally wrote a book on this for the local authorities, and would put even us gear-heads to shame for her ability to match shots to real backgrounds. :)

You can do their standard tour, which includes a bunch of locations for various movies, or if you're a nut like me you can supply all the movies / scenes and Cristina will make you up a special itinerary for a few dollars more. (OK, couldn't resist. groan.)

Anyway, basically all the "tank battle" / chase scenes were shot within half an hour's drive of Oasys. Many are actually shockingly close to the main highway, but in private property a lot of the time. The great news is because of the environment in the desert, very few of them have changed AT ALL.

So, we have Donovan looking...

Walking up a badlands canyon to where the tank went off the cliff:

On top of the cliff area:

Turn 180 degrees from the cliff and there's one of the areas where they shot the tank battle.

That kinda ruined a great chance for one of your kids to use the line, "Dad... we're well out of range!" Ba-dum-bum! ;)

Thanks for sharing; these are fantastic pics! :)

Yeah, great shots Kyle. In part they were what made me think Almeria may be worth a visit.

These are literally the same three rocks. Funny thing is that the way they are facing is almost 180 degrees from the way it's represented in the movie, although the spot is the same. (IE the background to the shot and the reverse shot is only about 30 degrees off being exactly the same background.

Looking back the other way. Frustratingly, the rocks have been tumbled over a little from then the powerlines were installed a few years ago.

Maybe they installed the power lines because people kept complaining about being WELL OUT OF RANGE. :D

Actually, you know what? Those freaking rocks haven't moved! I just realised in looking at the last shot that my son is standing in the same spot that Connery is in the top image. The hills in the background are a dead-match, and their car is parked on the same road as our 4WD.

Damn - that means my stupid fake binoculars shot is the wrong way round!

That's why I felt like I was taking crazy pills! Because when I was there the background didn't look like that and that was only 8 months ago.
