View Full Version : Getting into La Rochelle

It's looking likely I'm going to be able to get away from work in June to go to France for a month to coincide with the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings, which will be awesome.

After we go to Normandy, we're going to swing by La Rochelle and try to get access to the docks where the Raiders crew shot the Bantu Wind dockside scene and the U-Boat docking pens... in the U-Boat docking pens.

Access to this area is restricted, and I'm sussing out my options for getting in. There is no "tour" or avenue via the tourist office. Seems over time some scallywags have basically trespassed, but has anyone here actually done this? Or something more legal. Legal is better.

If you can't get in, I hear that an exact duplicate built on a sound stage exists somewhere. That might be an alternative option. ;)

I know it's a long shot, but I'd write the city of La Rochelle and explain that you are a HUGE Raiders fan and would like to inquire if there was a way to gain permission to visit the aforementioned sites you've named when you come there.

Who knows, if it's something not many people do (write that is), they maybe would arrange for a special accomodation.

Wouldn't hurt.

I have sussed out some other official options that look possible, but it's a bit of a hassle to organize. Would love to hear from anyone that's been there recently in the last year or two.

Ok, I'm writing this post from a suite at the Hotel Le Yachtman in La Rochelle, France. This is where the actors and principal crew stayed during the first few days of shooting Raiders.

I don't suppose one of you who has the complete making of book could take a shot of the relevant page in the shooting schedule that mentions the hotel by name and post it ASAP? The hotel seems to have no idea that Spielberg and co stayed here, and wanted more information.

I'll post some pictures in the morning, including of the infamous pool area where Nadoolman distressed Ford's jacket with a pocket knife.

On a side note, when did that making of book come out?? I haven't heard of it before and looks like something I'd definitely want to check out!

Ok, lets try this again.

Poolside at Hotel Le Yachtman:

Sorry NB, my pocket knife was MIA so no Nadoolman-style distressing by the pool.

Interior corridors. To be honest, some of the decor looks like it wouldn't have changed since 1980! :)

Not a bad little hotel. Apart from the stairs to the mezzanine in our room that tried to kill me.

La Rochelle Commercial Harbour. Here is where the Bantu Wind dockside scene was shot, and the U-Boat dock scene, inside the VERY impressive bunker complex.

It all still has its wartime camoflage job, something that was really cool, as none of the ones I have seen in Normandy have that intact anymore.

Getting closer (approved) access would have taken time I didn't have, and as its an extremely busy port with tons of security, I wasn't prepared to risk a 1600 Euro fine for the cause of sneaking in to stand on the dock itself.

In any event, if you just go to the fenceline, you can walk / drive around to see many angles of the dockside - and as you see here, you can see that the ship tying-down bollards match those we see a very bored Ford sitting on during filming.

Man, that's great to see. I like seeing both sets of photos as it gives great context to so much of what we've discussed. Love the poolside. I can envision the jacket distressing that took place now.

It's a shame about your MIA jacket distressing tool. Still..you could've splashed some pool water on your jacket or..something 8)

When you walk around the space, you could totally see how it's an area where the crew would hang out. The rooms are VERY small, so it makes sense that they would have gathered there to prep and plan. NB, I ~did~ use our bathtub to save my Surrogates jacket from a nasty oilstain if that helps ease your mind. :)

Outstanding! The members here are like INDIANA JONES film detectives! Amazing how you were actually THERE! I'm just trying to wrap my head around it. Super great job! It must bring so much satisfaction to visit these places, as not many fans would actually be able to travel there.

Please, keep up the great work! Indy_cheers
