View Full Version : Vintage pair of Alden 405's, possibly the hero boot?

Well, after watching the blu-ray of Raiders, over and over again, I'm very convinced that the "hero" boots if you will, are not the dark brown many have come to expect. While the AB boots are offered as THE BOOT, I think this info was based off of looking at DVD and not so good quality images to judge the colour as well as research to colours available at the time the movie was being filmed. The temple scenes on the blu-ray give probably the best look at the boots, their details, and colour.

I found this vintage pair of boots a long time ago on eBay and managed to save the images from the listing. They weren't in my size, but I think I probably should have snagged them up. These to me are more then likely THE BOOTS we've all been looking for. While I'm not trying to knock AB's offering (I have a pair myself), I think these are more accurate to the film. Look when HF is knocking off the spiders. We have a natural coloured welt with white stitching, and a white stitched moc toe.

I really wish I had a blu-ray drive so I could capture these images on my computer to compare.

Great find! I think you're right. The filters on the cameras in the movie seem to skew mid browns darker.

Anyone have contacts with Alden that could maybe get this boot made? My response from them was that "the 405 boot is available only in today's leather". I know it's possible to get a custom boot done, but I think if someone knows someone there it would be a lot easier.

I found some more images from an ended auction on Rakuten. The site said these were a deadstock 70's pair. I'm almost 100% convinced these are the boots worn in Raiders. Watch the temple scenes, and you'll see all the details in the boots shown here. I think these are the ones.

Great find, Exit! Add me to the list of those who think you've nailed it based on these pics. It's amazing how things keep getting "unearthed" in this hobby! ban-llama

And as an aside, I've never researched the boots as well as some of the other gear pieces so I have to confess ignorance: what are the major differences between 403s and 405s? I've seen both described as the Indy boots.

Thanks guys! I found the first few pics sometime last year or so, and thought they looked close. Once the blu-ray came out, I knew the were the boots. Now we just have to get Alden to somehow due a custom run or something.

And the difference between the 405 and the 403 is the leather. The 403 is the chromexcel pull up leather, while the 405 is the standard calfskin leather. I the chromexcel is from Horween as well.

Here is what I got from Alden while asking about a custom boot order for myself;
"No, the factory is not taking any custom orders at this time, and we are not sure if the program will start up again." Hopefully they do get something started, or it will be a massive search through the internet for a pair in 10.5D.

I think a "run" is 12 boots for a dealer or whatever. They do offer custom boot orders for consumers on a one boot level, but they have said that is on hold right now. The best bet would be to engage an Alden dealer today (like Adventurebilt or Context Clothing) and have them try to work with Alden to bring this boot back.

Totally. I was wondering though what the name of the color is or how they refer to it.

Ok I'm now 99.9% sure these are the boots. If you have the blu-ray, look at the pit jump scene. Right when they show his boots, you can see the colour and the heel colour exactly. The pic of the boots I posted almost show the heel all black, which is the same as the boots on screen. I can't get a good shot from the blu-ray to show. The dvd caps aren't good enough, the boots look to dark, because the picture is a bit darker. But trust me, they are there. Everything looks right.

The hero boots have the white stitched moc toe, the natural coloured welt with white stitch. The colour is a medium brown, with no red tint really (unlike todays 405's).

Ok, I was able to get a 1080p file of the film on my computer. I took a bunch of screens from VLC where I could get the boots the best.

Here are the "70s" boots where I could figure it was them.

This one especially you can see the white moc and welt stitch, the natural coloured welt, and the "brown" colour of them.

The boots are lighter then the jacket.
http://i.imgur.com/vlCfHH8.jpg

Really good shot to see the colour, even though the lighting is a little dark. You can even see how the heel build up is the same.
http://i.imgur.com/zUWpfEW.jpg

Not sure if this is Ford (I think it is) but you can see the brown colour here.
http://i.imgur.com/no0Rf06.jpg

Now this is probably a stunt man, but you can still see how they are lighter boots (probably not the Hero)
http://i.imgur.com/ua9wwya.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/r9jqSg8.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/owSonhP.jpg

You can really see how much lighter they are then originally thought. Look at is gunbelt colour and compare to the boots.
http://i.imgur.com/BUfBZne.jpg

Compare them to Sallah's boots. These next two shots almost look like the current colour offering, but I think it may be the lighting and dust.
http://i.imgur.com/7zFhsC3.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/kxoTHZ8.jpg

Again a stunt man, but it was known that Ford and the stunt guys would wear each others gear I believe. Really good colour here.
http://i.imgur.com/M3vVXlE.jpg

You can really see it here with Fords right foot. I think the other boot looks slightly darker due to the distressing and dust.
http://i.imgur.com/Okhu7Sf.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/9Jp8ixa.jpg

Truck throw you can see the brown colour. This is Ford.
http://i.imgur.com/XKNQBbP.jpg

Now this photo here is the only one I could find where Fords boot is darker then all the others. You can still see the white moc toe stitching. Not sure what boot this is, but it's the only time they really look dark.

Leather Soul Hawaii cigar cordovan. They do a batch now and again. A few years ago I tried to get my size 9 1/2 EE to 10 EEE, but the owner said they just make a batch of pre-set medium sizes that they send him. I was thinking though that although not screen accurate, based on what theexit has discovered and that the actual boot is likely gone for good they would work pretty well as far as color goes and they're made of horsehide. I want a pair so bad I can't stand it. Caution: spendy and they will NOT stretch PERIOD (not even an extra millimeter).

I have a few pairs of boots from Leather Soul, including their Ultimate Indy in Kudu Leather, and I have to say they get some of the best special make ups in Aldens. But if anyone here is interested in Cigar Shell cordovan I would start the hunt ASAP. Supply has been scarce and production takes quite some time, and many of Leather Soul's make ups sell out before they even hit the website. I contacted them last year and got in a preorder they had and got the last pair in my size two months before they posted the boots online.

If anyone likes the Brown CXL color, its a very richly colored brown pull up leather with burgundy tones, the have stock in Alden Indys at theshoemart.com

My current favorite pair of Aldens is my Leather Soul Ultimate Jumpers in Brown CXL. The color just wears well with everything, I get a lot compliments on them.

Hmn....it looks like the pair. I just can't quite get over the coloring just seems a little darker though probably just due to lighting or wear of shoe or something. They look pretty good when put up among the comparisons photos. Also i noticed the alden symbol in the footbed is laid out differently.

I don't think these are the ones. Logo in the sole is different, and the colour looks darker like Neutron stated. Look at these here http://www.blackbirdballard.com/Alden_405_High_Work_Shoe_Indy_Boot_13522.html These are the current 405's and they look a lot darker then in reality. I think these maybe just a pair from the 80's or 90's in pretty much the current colour way on the 405 today, or very close to it. Also the sole is different then the 70's pair, and is more like the soles or 80-early 90's pairs. This is probably close, but there could be disappointment if someone buys. The size is also (as I think looking at the 3rd pic very close) are 12E, not 11 as stated.

Here's a couple where I've finished burnishing the toe of one compared against the other. I haven't had a chance to look back through this thread to see how the burnishing looks against the compares of the actual film boots that we've already done. It might be better to let them darken naturally or maybe buff them out with a natural color shoe polish to give them more of the waxy looking shine of the film boots. Also, I guess it depend on of you want to get closer to the actual color of the film boots or the darker appearance of them on film.

So A/C means the following; C is the width of the boot, A is the heel size. I'd get measured on a brannock and see what your width is.

neutronbomb

It's always tough to buy without trying on unless you have experience with the Alden Indy Boot already. Personally my experience is that I wear an 11 in most other shoes, like converse for instance. However, because I have a wide foot they only fit with a dress sock like thickness. I own like 6 pairs of Aldens and maybe 10 pairs of redwings and I've found that with models with a round toe a 10 1/2 D in Alden fit with a dress sock and I have to go up a width in Redwing for the same fit. 10 1/2 E. If I want to wear a medium thickness merino wool sock I need to go up to a 10 1/2 E or even EE in Alden and a 10 1/2 EE or EEE in Redwing. But as far as length goes. It's typically a half size down from standard normal wear shoes.

Width is where you'll screw yourself. The one piece of advice I would give all day long forever and ever until the cows come home is to never ever buy too small. The idea that the leather will stretch just a bit with wear is a wives tale. If I were buying these boots I would only do it if I normally took a comfortable 10 1/2 in most other common shoes that I wear and had a foot a bit on the narrow side. medium to narrow.

JeffDJ
06-28-2014, 07:01 PM
Yeah, I did some measuring last night and determined my shoe width would be in the D or E range, depending, so these Aldens would be too narrow. Not that I could really afford to drop upwards of $400 on them anyway. :D

Looking forward to hearing your analysis and critiques on the boots.

Being a fan of brown, I love the colour of the vintage ones!

As for Flikr, I'm on that too, though I use Photobucket for posting images on forums. In any case, when a picture is up, in the bottom right corner there's an arrow icon, which will allow you to share the photo. If you click the Share arrow, a box comes up. Under the Code heading, click "BBCode" and you can select your size and copy the URL that appears in the window. That's what you'll use to post the image, like so:

https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2921/14542768369_5d2e87d700.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/oa6unF)005 (https://flic.kr/p/oa6unF) by srivinius1 (https://www.flickr.com/people//), on Flickr

Continuing, the URL that Flickr provides is astonishingly long, so you could probably edit it down to just the portion that has the .jpg extension. As you can see, the image above is also a link and includes the photo number, your name and the Flickr credit, and you can see in the lengthy link where all of that is incorporated. Hope you don't mind I used your photo to illustrate. I had to make sure my instructions to you actually worked! :)

OK, now I'm curious. :D Here's another of your photos just by itself, using just the .jpg portion of the long link:

Hey JeffDJ, those boots look great! While not the brown/brown of the vintage 70's boots, these still look a lot nicer to the last 5 years of boots produced. I'd say these were probably used in Raiders. If you look at the boots during the Cairo city sequence, and the going to the Map room scene you can see that this colour matches very good.

As for getting the 70's boot remade, I heard from Alden that if the materials are available at the time, the money is collected we could put through an order for 12 boots. Only problem is it would have to be done through an Alden store/retailer. There are none close to me that I can easily go back and forth to, to work with them and get leather samples etc.

The only if I can work with is the pictures of the deadstock 70's boot, the style code 405 and the code on the box 4F23015. I know they are calfskin leather, not chromexcel, they have the old cotton/duck lining, and a slightly stained welt, not 100% natural like the standard 405 today. Is there anyone that can help with this that lives relatively close to an Alden retailer? I would work to put as much together as I could.

^ To be clear, those are deadseascrolls's boots shown in my last two posts. I was explaining (and demonstrating) how he could post pix from his Flickr account. :)

The Exit,

Which ones do you think were in Raiders? I think the darker brown match LC.

I'm working on my Raiders gear and was curious as to which ones you thought were from raiders of the two pair that are pictured of mine?

Thanks

The brown ones the others are too red. The brown ones are too dark for what they actually are but match better because the film stock makes the actual boots look much darker brown. So I'd say they match better to what's seen on film. Don't ask Alden in San Fran though. Those guys are convinced it's the current red toned models. I got into it with them about a year ago. Pulled up this thread and showed it to them. They asked me to leave the store. Assholes. ban-llama

Thanks for your input NB.

If you look at the picture of the Nazi truck boots which seems to be the consensus on this particular thread as being THE Raiders boot color - aren't those exactly the same red as the ones I have? So wouldn't those be the genuine Raiders era boot?

What?? ??? I must have missed something big somewhere in this thread. That's not my understanding. Shit let's revisit.

Just want to make sure we're on the same page. I thought the consensus was that this was THE Raiders boot color:

Dear Marcus,

Thank you so much for shipping me the boots I left behind in the rush to get out the door. Trust me, they arrived just in time.

Your friend, Indy

That's why I thought the brown colored one's of yours below was a closer match. What's the story behind where you got them from?

The red colored one's of yours looks like it matches these from the Nazi Truck you mentioned. I think it's a good bet they are a stuntman's and not worn by HF. But, the red color is in the film so an argument could be made that either one of your boots would work.

DSS, are these your boots? If so, then maybe it's your photos that are making them look so red. From reading your posts I'm having a hard time figuring out which pair of your boots you are referring to when you say brown, vintage, red, etc.
