View Full Version : Some of my gear, old and new

Hopefully I'll keep adding to this. Anyway, I'm going to start out with my Herbert Johnson. I ordered this from Richard Swales in June 1999. He had a reputation for being a bit of a jerk, but he was extremely pleasant with me. Chatted for a bit and ended the conversation with "I'll get to work on it straight away." He must have, because less than two weeks later I had my hat. Some people who ordered these around the time I did weren't happy with the shape and reblocked them, etc. Obviously the shape isn't perfect, but it was good enough and it was cut and shaped by Swales, so I left it alone. I'm really glad I did. It still stays in the box it came in.

Instead of downsizing the pics, I suppose I'll just put thumbnails so more detail can be seen. It's really hard to get the hat to show in the pictures as the shade of brown that it actually is. I adjusted the color temperature and all, got close, but not dead-on.

You weren't kidding- the last three thumbnails look like three separate hats!

Still, not a bad-looking lid in any case. Looks like its held up all these years. :)

Thanks. Yeah I tried to go the flash route, but it was just too nasty looking so I just did longer exposures. I just read somewhere about someone else having a hard time trying to show the color of their HJ. I would say the third pic down is about as close to the real color as I got.
