What?! You came to SOUTH DAKOTA but couldn't jont down the road a little further to NORTH Dakota?! :hairguy: :D I'm kidding you know and have to throw in a little for my own state.

But if you want an adventure, we have lots of them. There's all kinds of legends up here that have yet to be solved - everything from a cache of gold that was taken from a Wells Fargo stagecoach and then supposedly buried in the badlands, to a mummified Indian papoose that was found once by a person in a cave and then mysteriously disappeared, supposedly by a group of Indians who still watch over it and protect its body. My all-time favorite legend is how the Indians, being chased by the US Army in 1863-64, fled down a hole in a large hill that was claimed to be a continuous underground tunnel that led out and away through the badlands with an entrance on the western side of the state. It's a legend of the Indians and I don't think anyone's actually descended into the mountain cave so that's actually something I've always been interested to do.

:offtopic: I know.

Really great videos of your travels!

No sweat! (I'm good at reading emoticons.) ;)

My thanks everybody- I thought it was time to put a face with the screenname. I do have some video of my 2005 trip to Minnesota (which by the way, was an awesome trip and a gem of a state) but Vimeo only lets me upload one HD video per week. (Unless I want to give them money for a pro account, but there's no reason to so right now.)

I'll throw some more stuff in this thread as I get time.

"Kid Huevos and the Forbidden City". Someone please cue up the "Raiders March". Great video. Thank you for sharing, once more. :goodjob: That place is breathtaking. The architecture, the history behind all that. Amazing. You are very fortunate to have had the opportunity to visit that historic place. And enjoyed that interplay between you and your daughter in the beginning. Good stuff.

The funny thing is, I've done several of these travel vids and have yet to use any music from the Indiana Jones movies! In fact, the only time I've used John Williams for a vid was part of his score from "Rosewood" for my trip to Minnesota.

Back to the topic: Here's something a bit more laid-back: A look at South Dakota's "1880 Town"

You're telling me! I visited it last year and that thing is simply AMAZING! There's no way I could be the owner of that place and if I went to look at my collections, I'd have to say good-bye to my family as I'm certain I'd never make it out of there. A maze of rooms that never end. The coolest part though is the actual house. I couldn't make a simple tree-house --- a young fellow built a HOUSE... on a pillar of rock no less.... with running water, etc.! Makes me feel

The mailboxes looked modern, as did several cars and trucks. There was a sign that said private property, not trespassing. Is someone living there still? If not, any idea when this could have been abandoned? Any idea why it would have been. I mean, there are bikes still laying outside. ....hey, this didn't used to be doom town now was it? lol.

Interesting. I like your videos and photos of your adventures!

The place made no sense at all- at the 2:50 mark, there's even a satellite dish mounted to a house's roof! Apart from the rabbits, prairie dogs and occasional passing car, I didn't see anybody anywhere. I wanted to do a bit more exploring, but I really wasn't sure just how far I could go- after all, what if there were people still living there?

I looked for more info and found an interesting blog:
http://utahsbest.blogspot.com/

(Supposedly there are a handful of people still there, but some of the info dates back somewhere between 1999 and 2005, and my visit was in April of 2012.)

Thanks for the compliments, by the way! :)

Cool video and very nice locations & beautiful vistas. There were some shots that were very reminiscent of the Indy movies. There was that long tunnel that I could imagine a German Messerschmidt plane passing by you in flames; and there were a few peaks towards the end that were triangular enough that they would have worked in the Paramount logo morphs. :)

Thanks, JeffDJ and HENRY JONES JR! :)

Zion is very scenic, but as we only had one day to spend there, there was a LOT more we didn't get to see. Our trip was pretty much just a taste of everything; some of the grander sights require a day's hike and/or wetsuits to slog through flooded underground tunnels.

My old lady is Chinese, so she doesn't "get" it. If she has any problems, she's never said a word. As far as wearing the gear, I find people are well-mannered about it in national parks. (Of course, if there are lots of people around I stow the whip inside the satchel so as not to scare the taxpayers.)

I've seen people dress up far more colorfully in some of the areas I've been- mostly dudes carrying enormous broadswords and wearing Viking gear (or medieval-age accessories) so dressing up as Indy draws far less commentary than you might think! ;)

Swords??? Seriously? Wow. I guess a fedora and satchel really is no big deal. I wear mine when I hike every single time. On hot days, like 90 degree hot days, My hair gets so matted down from sweat that it looks like I just came out of dunking my head in water. When you said your wife is Chinese, do you mean actually from China, or is she an American with Chinese ansestory? Hasn't she seen the films, and know what your doing with the whip and fedora? I wonder what other members wives or girlfriends think of us wearing this stuff. If I went somewhere with my wife and broke out the whip and fedora, she'd be so embarrased, she's say, "Honey, don't bring that..." She'd think I'm a man playing dress up. That's why I wear it alone. Do they think we are immature, or we are man-boys. I really wonder what they think. I don't think we have any female members here, so I can't get thier view. I love wearing my fedora and satchel when hiking. Noth'in wrong with that!

My wife came over here from Shanghai about 15 years ago, and only became a citizen recently. She's seen the films, but never says a word. "Must be an American thing..."

I'm not gonna lie, I AM playing dress-up sometimes! ;D I just try and take the gear to a location that's not my living room or backyard. That's kinda what the gear is all about for me, anyway. (and I find the satchel VERY practical for carrying my camera gear whenever I'm out on those locations!)

(Part 2 coming up next week, hopefully.)

Willie Scott lived in Shanghai too. Guess you and Indy both have something in common. You both have a love interest that lived in Shanghai!!
I guess in a way, we all are playing dress up (cosplay). I needed a hat with a brim for hiking, and something to carry my camera, snacks, keys, batteries, and a Sony Walkman. The satchel IS, like you said, practical. I didn't want a backpack, as I don't need something that big and cumbersome for a hike that lasts 3-5 hours. The hat with a brim is a must. Why not an Indy Fedora? It's warm in the fall and winter, but is pretty hot in the summer, but it's more practical, and shades more surface than a baseball cap. Yes, I could wear a lightweight hat with a big brim that breathes.......but then I won't feel like Indy (I listen to the John Williams Indy film scores when I hike).

I'm so happy that you have such an understanding, awesome wife!

I'm looking forward to part 2. I love your posts KidHuevos, keep 'em com'in! Indy_cheers

Nice shots of some iconic monuments!

Did you go to Devil's Tower after feeling compelled to create a scale model in your living room with household garbage, sand & clay? Or more importantly, did you see an alien landing strip on the other side? Ha-ha.

Also, what music did you use for this video? It sounds very John Williams-esque.

I had the urge to re-create it with piles of mashed potatoes, but never mind that. ;)

The music is from the Wall-E soundtrack, specifically the "Axiom" track. I think I mentioned somewhere else in this thread, but I have yet to use anything from the Indy movies as background music for my travel vids. (Although I did use John Williams' score from Rosewood when I visited Minnesota. It seemed oddly appropriate.)

Yeah, very good indeed! It was quite cinematic in HD too, and I recognized the score selection from The Dark Knight Rises. Lots of great shots there. KidHuevos

My thanks to both of you, HJJ and JeffDJ! :)

A couple clarifications- all my vids are in HD, it's just that some of the earlier ones were shot in "lower-grade" forms of HD. (If you guys know HD, the specs were 1280x720p and 1440x1080i for the Yellowstone vids and the NY and China vids.) If this one looks better than the others, I tried cropping it for that widescreen Panavision look and this was formatted for 24p instead of 30p.

If I haven't mentioned it before, I'm using the Canon Rebel T3i for anything I shoot lately. Very affordable camera at $800.

Also, that one shot in question WAS taken by my wife. I guess even a broken clock is right twice a day/a blind squirrel gets a nut every now and then. ZING! ;)

Utah is crazy when it comes to temperatures; we went in the spring of 2012, and in the day it can rain/snow one moment and suddenly get up to 75 degrees! If you watch the video closely at the 0:37 mark and the 2:29 mark you can see hail bouncing off my wife's coat & my hat.

Your daughter is getting so big! She was younger in the previous photos and vids.
The music sounded a lot like Vangelis. Was it really him, or music that just sounded like his style?
I had no idea that visitors to the falls could get so wet!
Has anyone in passing on your trips mention that you are dressed like Indy, or are you usually too far on trips to really be around anyone, as you seem to be out in nowhere most of the time.

P.S. I still LOVE you kicking that ninja in the face, and then gives the happy thumbs up!! Loooooove it! You always try to add something unexpected, and fun into your posts!

Fun video to see!

JeffDJ

Beautiful trip! I also thought the music sounded like Vangelis, though I don't recognize the specific track. Your daughter really seemed to be having a blast getting soaked by the water and spray at the falls. You might say she was "as giddy as a schoolgirl." :D And it looked like you were an equal opportunity falls-visitor by checking out the horseshoe falls on the Canadian side too.

On a technical note, I liked that moment where you had video of your wife struggling(?) to take a picture of your daughter, then you cut to the actual photo that was eventually taken. Kinda neat.

I've only been to the falls once, ages ago with my grandparents & sister. We didn't go on any tours, so had no need to wear the rain gear.

KidHuevos
01-22-2015, 12:07 AM
HJJ and JeffDJ, thanks! :)

A few answers for you guys:

- The music is indeed Vangelis; I hired him to compose a few tunes for this trip! ;) I kid, I kid. The tracks are from the 1984 film The Bounty starring Mel Gibson. I did use a few tracks from Blade Runner, but I haven't uploaded that section yet.

- This was probably the wettest vacation I've ever been on, and I didn't even go swimming! Going anywhere hear the falls guarantees a soaking, so they hand out those flimsy rain ponchos. I was worried my hat would shrink from all that moisture, but it suffered no ill effects.

- I seldom ever get "Indy" comments, partly because I tend to change the color scheme around and don't always carry the whip. (Especially not in a bustling city!) I did recall hearing someone comment, "It looks like someone's shooting an Indiana Jones movie over there" when I was in Goblin Valley in Utah.

(If you haven't seen that one, Click Here (https://vimeo.com/42984280) to watch!)

- Most normal people, when asked to watch someone's video of their vacation, will wisely decline or at least run screaming for safety. I'm trying to change that to make something entertaining so even complete strangers can get a kick out of it. :)

- I must be the only person who takes a picture of someone taking a picture. True, it's a bizarre practice, but it's a setup and a payoff. :)

- Again, thanks for the comments. Vimeo only lets me upload 1 HD video per week, so Part 2 will come in another 5 days or so.

Ah, that's why I didn't recognize the music. I do like that version of the movie (chock full of familiar Brit actors when they were younger, such as Liam Neeson), but I only have the "Opening Titles" track from the score on my iPod.

I had to hunt high and low for a complete soundtrack of the movie, and admittedly paid far more than I should have for a 2 disc special edition. Unfortunately, the sound quality is a bit muddy and I had to tweak it slightly for use in my videos, which still only marginally improved it.

If you haven't heard Vangelis' score for the movie Alexander, I highly recommend it! I used several tracks for the vids I posted in this thread, the Utah Highlights Click Here (https://vimeo.com/40812018) and Bryce Canyon Click Here (https://vimeo.com/49876367)

The entire score can be heard on YouTube here:

Agreed about the "Alexander" score! I didn't care much for the movie, but I own the CD myself. The must-listen track I put on my iTunes is "Titans."

Another really good Vangelis film score is for Ridley Scott's "1492: Conquest of Paradise", one of the duelling films about Christopher Columbus that came out in 1992 (to celebrate the 500th anniversary of Columbus's voyage). If you haven't done so already, I'd recommend giving it a listen.

Not only am I a BIG fan of that score, I already used it on my China Highlights video (1st page, 1st post of this thread.) :)

Are you familiar with Vangelis' Antartica soundtrack? (Another somewhat average film distinguished by Vangelis' marvelous score.)

Okay, here's Part 2!

I also really like the Antarctica score (though I have never seen the film it's from). It was also the first CD my dad bought when he got his first CD player!

Here's some photos of Niagara Falls when the water was drained, and even photos of it frozen over!

How were you able to ride in the Helicopter? Did you have to pay to take a tour in the air, or was it business related?

I did see your hat got a tad bit wet in a shot.

I also have THE BOUNTY on CD, but it too is a bootleg, and the sound is average.

Regarding music for The Bounty, the Vangelis album "Themes" includes the tracks for both the opening and closing titles music, and sounds great! :)

Thanks for the "dry" Niagara photos! I'd never heard about that, so it's interesting to see feats of engineering on that scale.

As far as the copter goes, we had to pay for the tour. Expensive as hell for about 15 mins of flight time but it was worth it. It was my second ride in a helicopter, my first was back in 2004 in Tennessee and although that ride was also expensive, it was about 45 mins long too, so we got our money's worth on that one. :)

(And yeah, my hat got SOAKED on that trip, Still holds its shape, though. Another score for Akubra!)

This is another video featuring the House on the Rock. (My first video was posted already, but that trip was back in 2007. This video features some new stuff on my trip in 2014!)

Ten months since this thread's had an update?

Gotta fix that- here's my highlights from my recent trip to Tennessee! (I was there about a decade ago, it was high time for a return!)

Admittedly, this features my daughter and niece more than me, but this is training for a new generation of adventurers!

Thanks, Photoss! :)

It is definitely a cotton Wested- I needed a light jacket and liked its look- it's starting to fray around the sleeves, but I'm going to wear it until it falls apart!

It would be cool for more people to participate in this thread, but I admit this sort of thing is not easy, and does take a level of fanaticism to pull it off. (You're trying to enjoy yourself and see the sights while simultaneously setting up shots and getting those pictures... I think there's less of me in this last trip because I was too busy wrangling an extra kid.) ;)

Thanks for the kind words! :)

If you liked that, this is the full ziplining video:

https://vimeo.com/188464954

(For the gear-related, I'm wearing my Wested shirt and a Todd's whipholder. Helmets are necessary, as you come quite close to the branches in some of the courses. Also, the second-to-last zipline (over the pond) supposedly moves you along close to 60 MPH, so who wants to lose their hat? :)

The zip lining looks like so much fun!! I'd love to do that some day. And yeah, towards the end as you're zipping over that lake it looks like you're travelling quite fast! :D
