View Full Version : Anyone got one of the "new" batch of Todd's jackets?

03-18-2012, 11:51 PM
The subject title says it all. I've done a cursory search but didn't turn up anything. I've been thinking about getting one from the new batch and was wondering if anyone had one to show (and I do allow for missing a massive thread on just this topic! ;)).

I picked up one of the new ones for my wife.
I like the new leather. It's softer and more substantial than his previous jackets.
The color is pretty close to my seal brown goat Wested.
It's a shrunken lamb and hers has some nice grain and a few striations, but, is fairly smooth overall.
However, I've seen a few posted on that other site that looked like they were made out of Tony's dino hide.
Todd said if you have a preference, let him know when ordering and he will pick out one with more or less grain.

Wait...todds (as in Todds Costumes) is now offering a shrunken lamb Indy? Wha?....pics?

03-19-2012, 08:24 PM
And is this the same type of leather seen on his "prototype"?

03-20-2012, 05:10 AM
Yep, that Todd (as in Todd's Costumes).

I'm not sure about any prototype. If you mean the run of jackets he called the "Bantu Winds", then, no. This leather is nothing like that. This stuff is very soft, but has some heft to it. The pigment seems pretty thin and the finish is semi-gloss, so it has a nice feel to it (not plastic feeling like the BW). The natural color of the leather under the pigment is light brown (I secrectly sanded a part of her inner pocket).

The grain on hers is pretty tame compared to some of the others we saw (we purchased this in person)

I'd love to throw it in the washer to see what would happen. >:D

As for pics.....

Some parts of your jacket remind me of Tony's Version II puckered finger tips shrunken lamb to me. Pretty Cool. Also, that you can choose the full-on shrunken cells look if you want.

Wow! ??? Awesome work, Todd! That grain looks dead-on to me, minus the striations.

Here's another jacket that was posted over at COW by Gorak (hope he doesn't mind)

This one looks more like the Dino hide/crispe type of hide. I wouldn't mind having one of these for myself.

03-21-2012, 01:57 AM
Yep. I wonder if all these skins were all tanned together at the same time or from separate tanning batches. Interesting.

03-21-2012, 06:23 AM
usually sheep is processed to be ultra smooth for the fashion industry. The natural grain of sheep/lamb isn't so smooth and the shrunken grain tanning process accentuates it, also making it more permanent. Those skins for the todds (probably not tanned in the shrunken process) would be skins normally rejected for the garment Industry as far as lamb goes, but it is just what we like lol. With use over time they may smooth some.

I remember Todd saying when he got the Bantu Winds that the hides he was using for those were enzyme treated during the tanning process.
However, he did not say if the new batch was treated as well.

Thank K-Wad. It looks like Todd has some real winners on his hands. Very intriguing.

No problemo.

I've got the itch for a new jacket and I'm having a tough time deciding between these two. Can owners of both chime in? I really love the striated look in the SL and I like the Hero pattern. But the new Todd's jackets seem to have the Indy vibe in spades and their $200 cheaper (once I figure in shipping and so forth). Can the Todd's really have the striated look? Is the Wested Hero a true three season jacket? I ask the last as I wear my Todd's jacket more (older version with matched yoke/arm sleave seams) than any other due to it's lightness.

Crisman... Wait. :-X

??? The plot thickens. Hmmm.

"Crismans" from what I have been reading and the pictures that I have been seeing, people have been disappointed with the new batch of the shrunken lamb from Wested Leather for the "Hero" jacket. People who have purchased the "Hero" jacket in that leather have stated that the leather is actually stiff with no drape and with very little "character" to the leather. Actually comparing it to stiff goatskin leather. From the pictures that I have seen, the leather looks nothing like "PLATON's" jacket or "Gunslinger's" jacket from TNO. The upside is Wested is now offering the "Hero" jacket in shrunken lamb in larger sizes such as 48 and 50 but for an additional charge.

If "PLATON's" jacket and "Gunslinger's" post is an indication that a new "Raiders" jacket vendor or a new offering from a current vendor is available, it maybe best to wait.

Now, I'm dying!

I just reponded to your PM and sent you some pics.

Personally, I'm not digging the look of the new batch of shrunken lamb from Wested.
I'm really not liking the blotchy coloring. Too bad, I really had high hopes for this one.

Now, If I could only get a Westd Hero in something similar to the leather that Todd is now using :banllama:

Is there any more information regarding this that I may have missed reading?

See that's the really weird thing. Are they actually paying attention? Veg tanned gnarly leather will have variations in colour and texture all over it. That is the POINT! I'm sure with some breaking in this stuff will rock.

The leather on the 'Mystery Jacket' looks perfect out of 'bag', though I'm sure we will get people complaining it has "funny dotty bits all over it...".

yes they will complain Kt you know it

Out of 'trash bag' ;) 8)

I have no doubt that the veg tanned leather will soften up quite a bit with wear. A trip through the dryer on no heat with a pair of sneakers would probably do wonders for it. Probably see more grain afterwards as well.

I get that there will be some color variations with this type of leather, but, the jacket CRB posted had some pretty noticeable spots where the leather was either much darker or much lighter.
I suppose it's possible that particular hide used in his jacket just didn't take the dye very well.

If I could get one with a more even color, I'd go for it.

And yes, some people would complain if their pile of gold was too shiny. ;)

The veg tanned shrunken leather has always presented to me like the famous shot of Ford on top of the flying wing.

But if they want a completely even tone you are hurtling back to chrome tanned territory. IMO.

I don't mind some variation in color, just don't want no dark splotches. ;D

After just now watching a short YouTube video of a comparison of the Wested "Hero" jacket in seal brown soft goatskin and the new batch of shrunken lamb, IMHO, the shrunken lamb didn't look THAT bad. Though the lighting in the video, and the quality, wasn't the greatest. Here's the video. FYI...my apologies for taking this post :offtopic:

Hmmm, now that I've seen the video, I really like it. Doesn't look blotchy at all.
Must be the flash photos of it that make the color differences really apparent.

Something about that leather just begs to have the crap beaten out of it.

Hi, everybody! Newbie to F&G here. In fact, I'm still a newbie when it comes to jackets. This is my first leather jacket.

This is, I believe, from Todd's (no, not that Todd... hehe) new batch. I distressed it with alcohol, water and high-grit sandpaper.

I'm still kind of on the fence over the new iteration of Todd's jackets. The color appears more brown, which I like. I've got a Bantu Wind that i really like but it's more toward the black end of the spectrum.Anybody got more pics of the new jacket?
